Well to improve this photo we should lengthen the exposure time of the image to the image sensor. In short either adjust the shutter speed or the aperture, lower and higher.

As you can see from the underexposed photo, we just adjusted the shutter speed(the amount of time the image is exposed to the image sensor/ exposure time). And it dramatically effect the photo, it gave more time to the image to be exposed and the amount of light that entered the image sensor gave it the proper lighting.

This photo is overexposed as a result in over adjusting the shutter speed, time was lengthen more than enough to let light pass through the image sensor.

The focal length setting of these shot gave a nice blur on its back, the focus was on the ball. The photo has a shallow depth of field. And it’s aperture was kinda big(which has a small opening) to let the camera focus on a certain part only.

          A lovely scenery isn’t it? This picture-perfect image was taken last November 28, 2008 at the parking area of SM City Clark at about 5 in the afternoon. Giving the sun and the tree a beautiful collaboration.

           Imagine your life without trees… Life without trees means life without food to eat, house to live in, chairs to sit on, papers to write on, no shades to rest with and a lot more. Now a days people do not give attention to the importance of trees. Take a look at our the mountains, as time goes by more and more trees are being cut down… sometimes illegaly… and many more.. This is what we call “DEFORESTATION”.

What is Deforestation?

          Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. The term does not include the removal of industrial forests such as plantations of gums or pines. Deforestation has resulted in the reduction of indigenous forests to four-fifths of their pre-agricultural area. Indigenous forests now cover 21% of the earth’s land surface.

GOING, GOING GONE!
Of great concern is the rate at which deforestation is occurring. Currently, 12 million hectares of forests are cleared annually – an area 1,3 times the size of KwaZulu/Natal! Almost all of this deforestation occurs in the moist forests and open woodlands of the tropics. At this rate all moist tropical forest could be lost by the year 2050, except for isolated areas in Amazonia, the Zaire basin, as well as a few protected areas within reserves and parks. Some countries such as Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Costa Rica, and Sri Lanka are likely to lose all their tropical forests by the year 2010 if no conservation steps are taken.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
Deforestation is brought about by the following:

* conversion of forests and woodlands to agricultural land to feed growing numbers of people;

* development of cash crops and cattle ranching, both of which earn money for tropical countries;

* commercial logging (which supplies the world market with woods such as meranti, teak, mahogany and ebony) destroys trees as well as opening up forests for agriculture;

* felling of trees for firewood and building material; the heavy lopping of foliage for fodder; and heavy browsing of saplings by domestic animals like goats.

To compound the problem, the poor soils of the humid tropics do not support agriculture for long. Thus people are often forced to move on and clear more forests in order to maintain production.

CONSEQUENCES OF DEFORESTATION
* Alteration of local and global climates through disruption of:

a) The carbon cycle. Forests act as a major carbon store because carbon dioxide (CO2) is taken up from the atmosphere and used to produce the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that make up the tree. When forests are cleared, and the trees are either burnt or rot, this carbon is released as CO2. This leads to an increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration. CO2 is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is estimated that deforestation contributes one-third of all CO2 releases caused by people.

b) The water cycle. Trees draw ground water up through their roots and release it into the atmosphere (transpiration). In Amazonia over half of all the water circulating through the region’s ecosystem remains within the plants. With removal of part of the forest, the region cannot hold as much water. The effect of this could be a drier climate.

* Soil erosion With the loss of a protective cover of vegetation more soil is lost.

* Silting of water courses, lakes and dams This occurs as a result of soil erosion.

* Extinction of species which depend on the forest for survival. Forests contain more than half of all species on our planet – as the habitat of these species is destroyed, so the number of species declines (see Enviro Facts “Biodiversity”).

* Desertification The causes of desertification are complex, but deforestation is one of the contributing factors (see Enviro Facts “Desertification”)

        Water is one of the most important needs of each and every one of us. But because of a lot of circumstances a lot of places in our world today are having shortage of water. The government and many concern groups and citizens are taking their steps in giving us advices and tips an conserving water.   Conserving water can also extend the life of your  septic system by reducing soil saturation, and  reducing any pollution due to leaks. Overloading  municipal sewer systems can also cause untreated  sewage to flow to lakes and rivers. The smaller the  amount of water flowing through these systems, the  lower the likelihood of pollution. In some communities, costly sewage system expansion has been avoided by communitywide household water conservation.

 10 Ways to Conserve Water at Home

1. Install low-flow showerheads, taps, faucets, and toilets. According to the Albuquerque Water Conservation Office, older faucets use between 3 and 7 gallons per minute, while low-flow aerators reduce flow to 1.5 gallons per minute. Likewise, a low-flow toilet can reduce water used per flush by 30 percent, from approximately 5 gallons to 1.6 gallons.

2. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, shaving, washing your hands, or rinsing dishes or vegetables. Each minute you have it off saves at least 3 gallons. In the shower, get wet, turn off the water to lather, then turn the water back on to rinse. To make this easy, some low-flow showerheads have levers to temporarily stop the water flow.

3. Fix dripping taps and leaking toilets by replacing washers and worn parts. A faucet drip or invisible leak in the toilet will waste up to 15 gallons of water a day, or 5,475 gallons a year. To check for toilet leaks, add 10 drops of food coloring to the tank. Wait 15 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, you have a leak.

4. Place plastic jugs filled with sand or stones in your toilet tank to reduce the amount of water it uses per flush. Don’t use bricks, which can flake off inside the tank and interfere with the toilet’s operation.

5. Wash only full loads in both the dishwasher and washing machine, or set the water levels to accommodate smaller loads.

6. Use biodegradable (phosphate-free) detergents and soaps and re-use dishwater in the garden. If you want to make an even greater impact, consider plumbing your house to a gray-water system that collects water from your sinks, washing machine, baths, and showers for irrigating (check your local water regulations first).

7. Use mulch and shade netting to reduce evaporation in your garden. Mulch helps the soil stay moist, and as an added benefit, reduces weeds, which are water gluttons. Water only when plants wilt or when it’s difficult to push a screwdriver into the soil.

8. Xeriscape. In arid regions, plant trees and shrubs that thrive on normal rainfall. Look for a nursery near you that specializes in native plants.

9. Plant densely in your garden. According to Howard-Yana Shapiro in his book Gardening for the Future of the Earth, the denser the vegetation, the more water is stored in what he calls “productive biomass,” meaning food plants.

10. Eat less meat. According to the U.S. Geological survey, it takes 2,607 gallons of water to produce a single serving of steak and 408 gallons for a serving of chicken. A handful of almonds requires only 12 gallons to grow, rice needs 36 gallons, and lettuce and potatoes need only 6 gallons each.

Many people are really into photography. People love taking pictures and always wants to be in the picture. But do they know the meaning of pictures and photography? What is photography? What are its rules and compositions?

Photography is the art or process of producing images of objects on photosensitive surfaces. It is the art, practice, or occupation of taking and printing photographs. It is about emotion, inspiration, and meditation. It is the expression of what you are and how you feel. Taking your own photographs means making your own composition. Composition is something that is created by arranging several things to form a unified whole. That is exactly what it is. The composition of your photograph is the combination of elements coming together to create the whole image.

There are three rules of photo composition. The rule of thirds, the golden section rule and the diagonal rule.

The Rule of Thirds is based on the fact that the human eye is naturally drawn to a point about two-thirds up a page. Crop your photo so that the main subjects are located around one of the intersection points rather than in the center of the image:

The Golden Section Rule states that the eye is naturally drawn the points that lie within this ratio in a photograph. In order to achieve this, the picture is divided into 9 unequal but symmetrical parts with 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines as guide. The distance from the top to the first horizontal line must be in a golden ratio against the distance from this line to the bottom of the picture. The same goes to the distance of the bottom horizontal line to the bottom of the picture against the distance of this line to the top of the picture. The same must be followed for the vertical lines.

The Golden Rule

The Diagonal Rule states that a photograph looks more dynamic if the objects fall or follow a diagonal line. The diagonal line doesn’t have to be an actual line and it doesn’t have to be a straight one. It could be the edges of a river, the top of a forest, or even an imaginary line connecting the different objects in the scene.

What is exposure?

In the simplest terms, exposure is: is the total amount of light allowed to fall on the photographic medium during the process of taking a photograph.

Whether it is a digital sensor chip or grains of chemically dosed silver on a film, it is the same thing. The greater the amount of light that falls onto a particular region of the photographic medium, the brighter that part of the recorded image will be when reproduced, whether on screen, print or slide.
